Human rights protection is key to new global arms trade treaty | New Europe

  1. FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT AND ENFORCE; ... Though EU-wide rules on arms transfers, in place since 2008, can provide a model for the rest of the world, implementation and enforcement are often lacking. If treaty negotiations this month are to have a successful outcome, the EU must show greater leadership and recognise that it still has much to do to prevent its own arms from being used to commit atrocities, and by ensuring that the final treaty addresses the grave human rights problems engendered by one of the world’s last major unregulated industries.
